Hellgate: London - Namco saves the day?

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 15:18 - Top
Strategy Informer are reporting that:

According to an official post on the
Hellgate forums, it seems that Namco has stepped in to save the downfall of Hellgate: London.

Zack "Ozuri" Karlsson Director, Business Development for Namco has said: "I know everyone is looking for an announcement, and we'd love to make one -- but right now, many things are in flux and we don't have all the information yet. As soon as we do, we'll post here on the forums, on the website, and anywhere else we can find you.

Bioshock: An interview and a preview

PS3: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 11:19 - Top
From VideoGamer.com we have an interview from Wesley Yin-Poole with 2K Games senior producer Melissa Miller on the PS3 exclusive Challenge Room DLC:

VideoGamer.com: Everyone is excited about the exclusive content the PS3 version is going to get. Is the DLC going to be there from launch?

MM: Right now we're not discussing our release window just yet. Right now we're just concentrating on BioShock PS3 launch in October. Our strategy for E3 is just to say, hey, we are going to be doing this add-on content. I mean, it's a really great thing. One of the designers from the first game, Dorean Hart, was really the leader for designing these challenge rooms. It was just great to be sitting there with him and talking about all the different ideas. The challenge rooms ended up being this really really cool idea. At E3 we just wanted to announce that they exist, because we are doing some other unique stuff for the PS3 version that will be on the disc. For the 360 and PC versions we did release a series of patches as well as downloadable content with the new plasmids and gene tonics - all that stuff is already going to be on the PS3 disc. You can play through and get Sonic Boom and some of the other gene tonics that were released after the initial launch. We've added a new survivor difficulty mode. It's super hardcore! We're actually excited about that. I can't even play it, it's so ridiculous.

whilst EuroGamer weigh in with a preview of the PS3 version of the game:

"Challenge Rooms make creative use of all these tool-sets in new and fun ways." They "retain the flavour of Rapture", she says, but they are discrete. "We've kind of been joking around that they're the pulp adventures of Rapture," she says, and to illustrate this we're shown how the levels will presumably be presented to the player - via comic book covers bearing names like Sander Cohen's Chamber of Thrills. To access the contents, you'll download from the PlayStation Store and go straight to them from the main menu.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - Three short previews

PC: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 11:08 - Top
There are short E3 previews of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition from Gaming Nexus:

Load times have been improved dramatically. Load times were looking along the lines of a minute or longer. Now, you’ll only have to put up with ten to twenty seconds.

Kotaku:

o, The Witcher isn't new, but the whole presentation focused on the improvements made to the game. After apologizing for already having given the presentation five times in a row, Tomasz Gop enthusiastically explained what the 'expanded edition' really expanded upon (and kept coming back to 'fan suggestions'). The expanded edition features over 5,000 lines of totally rewritten and rerecorded script, as well as a whole new German script created from scratch (was it that bad?)

and UGO GamesBlog:

I think everyone’s biggest gripe about The Witcher revolved around the game’s lifeless dialog sections. Characters merely stood about, seemingly stiff with rigamortis as they barked out their dialog to Geralt, the main hero of the game. Thankfully, all those issues have been addressed. A ton of dialog animations have been added to the title that put it more on par with something we may have seen with some of the older Bioware titles like Jade Empire. The game didn’t re-invent itself and stun us with the liveliness that we’ve seen in Mass Effect, but still, the new animations do make the dialog sections much more palette-able.
Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir - E3 coverage

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 10:56 - Top
Lots of E3 coverage for the recently-announced NWN2 module, Storm of Zehir form firstly Crispy Gamer:

The expansion returns to the formula that made Baldur’s Gate and the first Neverwinter game so popular: open-ended adventures and environments. Players can expect full party customization, dungeon crawling, free exploration in a non-linear game world via an Overland Map and good old commerce - by hook or by crook.

then GameZone:

The game begins on a ship, which quickly crashes and washes ashore on Samarach, the new environment. Batiri warriors (jungle goblins) don't appreciate your abrupt arrival and will attack as soon as they realize you're there. But they're the least of your threat. Two new enemies were shown: the reptilian human snakes (called Yuan-Ti) and large mechanical spiders (called Clockroaches).

next Gaming Nexux with just a few lines:

I had about ten minutes of demo time for this expansion, so I didn’t get too much information on this. What I did learn was that some new job classes have been added, although I only saw the class “Swashbuckler”, which is a pirate class job that is designed primarily for melee.

and finally Kotaku:

The first feature noted was the expanded party editor, now featuring full party customization of up to four party members. There has also been several new classes added, though the only one mentioned in any depth was the "swashbuckler." The party conversation system was demonstrated, with answers and questions being based on intelligence, sills, class and so on. A new, detailed overland map has been added that is a walking map — no more zooming from place to place. The maps are completely moddable, and also feature traps and other surprises that players can interact with via skills.
Dragon Age: Origins - E3 Preview @ GameShark and EuroGamer

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 10:46 - Top
GameShark have posted their E3 look at Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins:

When Dan Tudge describes Dragon Age: Origins as the “spiritual successor” to Bioware’s celebrated Baldur’s Gate series, he’s understating things a bit. Dragon Age is Baldur’s Gate, only prettier, deeper and with no Dungeons and Dragons license. It has party based tactical combat centered on a main character, action you can pause mid-stream to get a handle on everything around you and very traditional dialog trees.

and EuroGamer have also produced a two page preview of the game:
This, however, is a "realistic" dark-fantasy setting distinct from the high-fantasy of Baldur's Gate, so we wouldn't expect them to be swarming all over the shop. The game focuses on the war with the Darkspawn, that numberless mutant horde. We're introduced to the game as a human warrior who belongs to the Grey Wardens, a neutral order of wise men dedicated to the eradication of Darkspawn, which inspires equal amounts of reverence and mistrust in the more politically-minded characters that we meet. It's not clear if all players will join the Grey Wardens, however; play later switched to a female elven mage, and one cut-scene did show a council of mages opposing the Grey Wardens' advice.

The tales say that there is an ancient mystic who lies in wait, known as the Oracle of the Orb, and that this Oracle alone possesses the knowledge of where and how the magical Orb might be won from its guardian. To find the Orb, one must seek out the Oracle.

Your journey begins...

Fable 2 - A pair of Previews

Xbox 360: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 11:14 - Top
E3 previews of Lionhead's Fable 2 come from IGN

These are all just virtual characters, so being mean to them isn't that big of a deal, is it? There are no moral quandaries with starving a virtual wife or killing a digital villager... right? Perhaps even the worst of us will find treating the Fable 2 inhabitants poorly once you take advantage one particular feature in Fable 2. You can rename any random character you meet in the game. If you want to recreate your real family in digital form, you can. Does cheating on a virtual wife that has the same name as your own make it worse? Maybe. Just don't let your real wife catch you virtually cheating on her.

and Gameshark:

This is seen in how the game handles families. You can get married, of course, but now this means responsibility. You must provide for your spouse and children, but heroism doesn’t pay in anything but reputation. So sometimes you’ll need to get a job. Every building in the game can be bought if you have enough coin – one castle costs one million gold – and some can serve as the foundation of a thriving family business. Ignore your family, and you might get divorced, losing half of your assets to your wronged better half.
Flagship Studios - Max Schaefer says "Thank You"

Posted by Lydias @ 10:44 - Top
Hellgate Guru report that:

Just before the official Mythos forums went offline, Max Schaefer posted a personal thank you to all the fans and players of Mythos:

They say it’s not so much the destination as it is the journey that’s important. We’re really hoping that’s the case around here these days. I can’t really believe I’m writing a post like this, but here we are faced with the unpleasant task of taking a hiatus from this crazy project. Unlike most games, Mythos has been running with our testing community for almost its whole life. I really feel like we’ve all done this together. And despite this bump in the road, I think we’ve succeeded wildly. This is undoubtedly the best game community I’ve ever seen. This is the best game development team in the world, in both Seattle and San Francisco. The things we’ve learned here, and with you all, will be with us forever.

PC gaming is changing, and I believe we’ve had a sneak preview with Mythos. With any luck, this will not be a long hiatus, and Mythos will be back. But even if it’s not, and even if we all move on, we’ve taken a lot of important steps forward. Game development is in many ways a continuum, and we all build on what came before. I know neither Travis, the great Mythos dev team, nor myself are planning on doing anything but make games into the future. So no matter what, we’ll pick up where we left off and you’ll be hearing from us shortly. We may not be the best business people on the planet , but we know how to make games. And once the dust settles here, that’s what we hope to get right back to doing as soon as possible. So until then, aux revoir Mythos community! It’s truly been a privilege to have experienced this with you.

Max Schaefer, your humble executive producer

Fallout 3 - An interview and a preview

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 10:12 - Top
And still the Fallout 3 coverage continues...today we have an audio interview from Joystiq who spoke to Todd Howard:

Did they think about calling it something besides Fallout 3? Like, Fallout: Origins? They did, but Howard is "not a fan of that... I like Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3. It didn't hurt Grand Theft Auto 3, did it?"

and an E3 preview over at GameShark:

Within five minutes of leaving Vault 101 and confronting a few enemies, it was crystal clear that Bethesda has crafted an amazingly intuitive, highly inventive combat system. Equipped with any weapon, you're free to engage foes in real-time. Whip out your shotgun for a quick blast or lob a few shots from a pistol--as long as you have a good eye, you're welcome to take aim at enemies. It's this twitch element that has scared Fallout fans from trusting that the game can deliver a faithful sequel; however, remnants of the earliest installments' turn-based battles are evident in the game.

Fallout 3 - Previews at Kotaku, Voodoo Extreme, Crispy Gamer and CVG

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 17:24 - Top
I'm sure I have missed a good few bits of Fallout 3 coverage but here are four more previews from Kotaku:

Like Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series - especially Oblivion - Fallout 3 is a game that melds itself to the gameplay style of the player, offering something for people who want to explore, kill, or try on different clothing. By the time my 30 minutes was up I was wearing Mad Max-style bondage armor and a baseball cap, while others didn't even bother going into their inventory at all, the barbarians.

Voodoo Extreme:

I can’t talk about all of the things that I saw, but I have a feeling that the game is shaping up very well. Despite the smooth controls on the 360 version, odds are I’ll be getting Fallout 3 on the PC, but it’s good to know that the Xbox 360 is a viable option if my computer becomes sentient and needs to be put down. Look for Fallout 3 to ship out on the PC, PS3 and 360 this Fall. Hopefully we can see more soon!
Crispy Gamer:

Talk is cheap. There are tons of quests to undertake and characters with which to interact. I only bumped into one talkative survivor in my journeys -- a reformed prostitute hiding in one of the few standing houses. The rest of the humans shot first and asked questions later. You can do the same if you don't mind earning a bad reputation.
And CVG:
You see, my first reaction to playing Fallout 3 was how empty it felt. There are wandering monsters and pockets of Raiders here and there - but the feeling of stalking through a barren wasteland is like no other. Bereft of the immersion-sapping load times of STALKER when moving between zones and the near-constant wolf and bandit attacks of Oblivion, this game is draped with a feeling of solitude. Sure, the tranquillity of my Route 355 vantage point would soon be lost when my attempt to negotiate the descent resulted in a 50 metre fall but, in its early stages at least, Fallout 3 does have that vital feeling of being alone on a brutal and vast frontier.
Dragon Age: Origins - A couple more previews

PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Lydias @ 12:57 - Top
A couple more previews for Dragon Age: Origins have appeared across the net, firstly from The Vault Network:

The game graphics are extremely well done. The vistas are stunning, and the close-ups even more so. The battle of Ostagar was the demo’s centerpiece. As the epic battle unfolds, the player is told that his quest is to light a beacon on top of a tower that has been taken over by the enemy. At this point, the player is controlling a full party of adventurers, including a powerful mage who can cast both elemental type damage spells as well as healing spells. At the bottom of the tower, one of the guards joins the party. Making their way to the top, the party runs into several enemies, allowing Dan to show us how combat works. Gameplay can be paused at any time during an encounter, and you can then jump to any party member to attack, heal or buff, much like in Baldur’s Gate. Using tactics is your key to victory. Spells in Dragon Age can interact with each other. For example, the enemy can slow you down by making the floor slick with grease. If you’re battling a mage, he could also cast a fireball spell to light up the grease. But your mage can also counter that with a blizzard spell, immediately putting out the fire.

and second, Voodoo Extreme:

Obviously, the first thing I noticed were the graphics. It’s difficult to pick them apart when shown off on a giant projector screen but Dragon Age’s visuals were nothing to sneeze at. The world sports an impressive amount of detail; has sweet particle effects, plenty of atmospheric and ambient touches that help immerse you into the universe. There’s an epic feel about the battles as you can see literally hundreds of people (and monsters) on the screen at once in some cases. Decal effects are in, as the blood and gore stays on you, even after you zone into new areas. Can you ever clean those brain bits off your shield? Hopefully!
